What was your degree(s) or focus?
Production Systems and Entrepreneurship in Horticulture
How are you planning to use your degree?
To continue my education into a graduate degree with an intent to become a teacher of horticulture.
Whom do you want to thank?
I couldn’t have excelled through such a difficult past few years without a few key figures in my life. I’d like to first thank my parents, family, and Suz for always believing in me, and giving me a reason to trust in myself that I can do it. Next, Dr. Brian Jackson has been there for me since I first transferred to NCSU. By being a personal mentor, professional advisor, and inspiration I can shoot for the stars and make it as long as that is my goal. My co-worker, Brian Schulker has been by my side since I began working in soilless substrates and has been a great student mentor, along with giving me my daily dose of sass I need to move on. Lastly, Dr. James Clark has not only taken me into his own home with open arms, but has become someone I look up to as my “Raleigh Grandfather.” I’ve learned from him that kindness is still in the world, it just needs to be found. Through his few, but very important words, I’ve learned very important lessons and take them to heart with me. These are all the most important people to me that have believed in me since my journey first began, and I thank you all for that.
What is the best thing about studying horticulture at NC State?
Studying horticulture at NC State has enabled me to make connections in our very large and growing industry. Nothing is more important then making healthy relationships, and this is why it is great to take time to walk around our facilities and make these connections. Through NC State, I’ve not only made connections in our department, but I have throughout our country.
Clubs and Activities
PAX, NCSU Horticulture Club, Undergraduate Research in the Horticultural Substrates Laboratory, Goodnight Scholars Program Student and Ambassador.
Do you have plans for after graduation? Are you currently working?
Right after graduation, I plan to take a social detox by visiting a sustainable chocolate and coffee farm in the Caribbean. Once I return in June, I will begin my graduate studies under Dr. Brian Jackson researching the soilless production of small fruits with an emphasis on strawberry production.
Advisor Comments (Dr. Helen Kraus)
Passionate – that is the best word to describe Brandan. He loves people, plants, and the fabulous food that plants produce. Brandan is another leader among our students that is always willing to lend a hand. He has jubilantly served as the NC State Horticulture Club president for the last year. He will be continuing his education pursuing a Master of Science in Horticultural Science working with Dr. Brian Jackson.
